We use WhatsApp for a couple reasons.
my unit is overseas in Germany. When new additions to the unit arrive, they typically still have their US number and haven’t set their phone up with a German company. This means that every text we send them, every text they send us, and every time a call is placed, it’s charging both of us international fees. We use WhatsApp because it doesn’t use cellular services, and is thus exempt from international fees.
As you said, it is encrypted, so our messages are secure.
You can easily make group chats for team, squad, platoon, and company level using the app.
You can easily put out information using the app by forwarding messages from WhatsApp. For example, if you’re a platoon sergeant and you received a message from 1SG saying that COB will be at 2000, you just hit “forward” and click on your platoon chat. Now it’s been put out to everyone in the platoon with the click of a button.
To those who are saying this is a scam, using WhatsApp for military purposes is a fairly new thing that has been popular for OCONUS. They may not be getting scammed, it might just be a popular app to use in the military...
